The 2013 Outback got a new CVT, not sure how it compares with the 2012. The CVT is not one of our complaints tho, it's pretty slick. The Legacy simply has too many odd things that just don't work quite right in the whole, so while overall it's a nice vehicle, it's no Accord. Being slightly smaller and having a smaller front bench, the Legacy fits my SO better, but much worse for me. In the end, we needed the AWD in snow and dirt country here, SO puts on 10k winter miles, so we accepted the shortcomings.

We cross-shopped the Crosstour and the Outback in Nov. '09, and while the OB was good, it was not a Honda. The spooky steering and the interior caused us to lose interest in the Subaru. Aside from the wheel well intrusion, the rear visibility and he ugly butt, we have not regretted our CT purchase. It has fulfilled our every need cargo- and comfort-wise. We use it on long hauls because of the restful and competent ride, the excellent handling for such a large car, and it's ability to track in a straight line hour after hour. We look at Outbacks on the road and say thanks to ourselves for picking the CT.

Now, that said, if they get around to downsizing it to Accord size, correct the weird cargo area, fix the roofline, the visibility and the rear styling, we're back to being a candidate for the FMC. We thought we were going for the RDX this year, but it turns out there was no reason to move. The CT was still doing an admirable job and will likely continue to do so for quite a while yet.

All the changes do nothing to help what is at best a polarising design and at worst a downright ugly one. The original Crosstour, in black, from some angles can look quite impressive. But it photographs terribly. Its shape also seriously compromises interior space - apart from really long loads, never mind a CRV, a Fit is more useful. Suspension intrusion just compounds it further. And forget the Outback - look at an Odyssey - that has independent double wishbone on the back with minimal intrusion.

Never has a car been released that drives so well, both for the driver and passengers, but is so crippled by its inherent styling language. This update does nothing to improve things - in fact going from pics only I'd say it is worse. Its a round, blobby thing and the squarer grille just confuses this statement. The original mule. an NA Accord /TSX wagon hybrid looked so much better.

The interior changes are fine, in someways neater than the new Accords, and at least symmetrical, and I like the lack of chrome inside. Chrome can look really good inside, just Honda does not know how to execute it properly. Nor does Chevy or Ford for that matter. We have a trim kit on an Accord in our showroom - charcoal cherry - and while I find these things over the top much of the time, in some areas, where it covers the shiny bits, it's a definite improvement.

Well put, A77, my sentiments exactly.

For us to "buy in" for a repeat CT purchase, the MMC needs to be Accord sized, same frontal area as the Accord, maybe a couple of inches jacked up to suit their "target market" (whatever that is) and a total re-do behind the B-pillar: Considerably smaller wheel intrusion into the cargo area, a more squared-off roofline, lose the crossbar in the rear window, and by golly, make the styling cohesive end to end. Yes, the roofline on the mule is what we need.

Now then, this is Black Friday in the U.S. so the spousal unit required me to get up and participate. Good to find out the odd-shaped Christmas toys for the grandkids fit perfectly inside the hatch, and best of all, U.B. (Ugly Butt) was very easy to find in the packed parking lots of the big-box stores where we shopped today, amongst all the SUVs and minivans. A small benefit indeed.

I agree with all of the above.

However, instead of fumbling at all with the Crosstour, Honda could have made an effort bring this to the US: the Honda Stream. I've always thought it was a decent looking car, and it sort of suits the buyer market of the CT.



1) Looks way better than the CT.
2) Seats 7 people.
3) Maybe add a 2.0L AWD version for those who really want it. (this one has a 1.8L)
