I may be totally wrong about the CVT, but I don't think so. Honda is taking the same road as GM, Ford, and Chrysler and plan out the Mean Time Before Failure (MTBF) of these units. As long as they get them past the warranty, their good with that, let the customer handle the failures.

Based on my 28 years of driving Honda's, I do not agree with you at all!

The CVT seems to offer mileage and performance advantages and Honda, as always will back them up.

Honda replaced the 4 speed automatic transmission in our 2000 Accord when the car was 7 years old and 78,000 miles, when the shifts got a little sloppy, at no charge.
At 105K, our Accord is still doing well with that transmission.

2ND PLACE: Honda Accord
The ultimate pure family sedan

If you're searching purely for family-sedan virtues -- room, comfort, efficiency -- stop reading right now. The new Honda Accord is your car. So why only a 2nd-place finish? You'll understand once you read our winner's review. For now, let's turn to what makes the Accord so special.

For 1 thing, this is a conspicuously spacious sedan, with a truly palatial back seat and unparalleled airiness all around. "Very roomy," writes Martinez. "Most of the materials have an Acura-quality feel; well above the cheap plastics in the Chevy and the Ford." The seats are splendid, with a richness and plushness rare for this class. Climb aboard, and right away you know you're riding in something special.

The powertrain continues that sensation. The 2.4-liter 4 and CVT deliver tied-for-best acceleration, fine observed fuel efficiency (we recorded 25.8 mpg), and smooth, refined manners. "Nice linear powerband without any dead spots," writes Febbo. "Best CVT on the market," adds Evans. "You can only tell it's a CVT when it hangs at an rpm for a few seconds. Feels like a regular automatic and makes the Accord feel quick."

Ride quality is top-notch, though communication with the road is minimal. Still, such a relaxed demeanor is probably what many buyers want. Though not the quietest car in our test, this is easily the quietest Accord ever -- a huge step forward for Honda.

The new dual touch screen's center stack borders on overly complex ("Just give me my buttons back," writes Evans). And some of the pieces look chintzy. Febbo: "The smaller touch screen and shifter have a rainbow-glitter black that looks like it was stolen from a bass boat." Those few bits look out of place in an otherwise premium cabin.

The Accord also offers an optional right-side blind-spot detection system that, when you click the right-turn signal, beams a blind-spot view from a right-mirror camera to the center display. It drew mixed reviews. Evans: "I don't like losing my nav screen when it comes on at a stop sign and I don't need it." Seabaugh: "I found the monitor distracting at 1st, but I grew to love it. The view is crisp and clear, a welcome feature."

Overall, everything most family-sedan shoppers will want is right here: a beautiful and cavernous cabin, a generous trunk, excellent fuel efficiency, an abundance of creature comforts, a quiet and plush ride, and a superb, highly refined powertrain. "So why would you rank this masterpiece 2nd?" you ask. Febbo sums up the Accord's 1 shortcoming well: "You will never have any fun in it." As we noted in our introduction, to us the driving experience matters. And that's just what our number-1 best-seller delivers.

It's 27/36.

I guess I'm still wondering if at some point the epa will revise the Accord up by one and the Altima down by one, but that's almost certainly just wishful thinking.

AutoBlog: PlugIn
The average driver won't care much about this level of detail, of course, and the Accord is an average driver's car. The plug-in hybrid version is predictably the heaviest of all Accords, but it still performs admirably in city and highway driving. Journeying for a few hours through the hills outside of Santa Barbara, the PHEV had enough pep to entertain us powering out of the curves, even as we kept a curious eye on the battery SOC, just because that's what interests us. The electric motor provides reliable punch, especially in passing situations, and the electronic power steering feels slightly disconnected, but buyers won't mind much since it helps with fuel economy. It's the little things like this that will push the Accord PHEV to an expected 100 MPGe or more. We'll probably find out the exact number at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November. All we can go on right now are the provisional MPGe charts that Honda showed, which have the Accord beating the Chevrolet Volt and the Toyota Prius Plug-in in the MPGe category while the gas-only MPG was shown to be somewhere between the Volt (at 37 combined) and the Plug-in Prius (at 50).

2013 Honda Accord re-engineered into a well-rounded sedan
The 2013 version of Honda's venerable mid-size sedan gets a clean-sheet redesign that overhauls the Accord's engines, transmissions, styling and size.

http://www.latimes.com/business/autos/la-fi-autos-honda-accord-review-20121004,0,732494.story

The 2013 Honda Accord is closer to that of a luxury car than anything else in its class.

Honda's nerds have done it. They've cracked the code, solved the riddle, unscrambled the jumble that, until now, has perpetually confounded a large swath of the automotive engineering teams around the globe.

What'd they figure out? A worthwhile transmission. A part of the car that's traditionally as sexy as a pair of adult diapers. Yet it's a part that contributes mightily to the overall excellence of the 2013 Honda Accord.

Honda's venerable mid-size sedan has gone through a clean-sheet redesign that overhauled the car's engines, transmissions, styling and size. The result is a well-rounded vehicle that starts at $22,470 and is sure to give a pile of headaches to competitors including the Toyota Camry, Volkswagen Passat, Chevy Malibu, Hyundai Sonata and even the excellent (and also recently redesigned) Nissan Altima.

Thank those lab-coated boffins.

The transmission in question is called a continuously variable transmission (CVT). Unlike a conventional automatic, it has no fixed gear ratios. Instead, you have basically one gear ratio that keeps the engine running at its optimum revolutions per minute relative to the speed of the vehicle. The payoff is better fuel economy, and thus automakers are adopting them in droves.

Ah, but then there are the side effects. At cruising speeds, most CVTs keep the engine revving high, which means loud, which means annoying. Plus, when you mash the throttle to pass someone or merge onto the freeway, the transmission can't downshift through the gears to give you more power. Thus, acceleration in a car with a CVT can feel leaden.

Yet for a mere $800 on Honda's Accord LX and EX models, you can get a CVT that has all the fuel-friendly habits of its peers, with none of the vexing side effects. The smarts at Honda paired some hyper-capable software with a torque converter to create a gearbox that most drivers will never know is different from an automatic.

This matters because it contributes mightily to the quiet motoring of the 2013 Accord, which is closer to that of a luxury car than anything else in this segment. Not only does this new transmission keep the engine hushed at freeway speeds, but it conjures up the appropriate power when you need it, even from a dead stop. Only when you really put your foot down hard and keep it there does the engine get noisy.

The Accord's upscale feel is aided by how solidly it feels put together. Over rough, clattering roads, this Honda barely bats an eyelash. The suspension is well balanced between being firm enough for confident road feel, and soft enough to keep your fillings in place when the potholes strike. There is some body roll through turns, but it's well managed. The driver's car in this segment remains the sporty Nissan Altima, but the mainstream bent of the Accord's handling makes it a standout with broad appeal.

The Accord's relative indulgence is further conveyed by its interior and exterior design.

This guy has absolutely no clue how a CVT works...
He says that a CVT has one gear ratio? Wrong, it has an infinite number of ratios between two extremes. CVTs do not keep the engine revving high at cruising speeds, but rather because of their wider ratio spread they often have a much lower cruising RPM than a traditional automatic. And the most ridiculous part is where he says that a CVT can't downshift...that's absurd! Many people don't like the way CVTs "downshift" to a lower "gear", but there's no argument that they absolutely can downshift when asked.

I'm sure that most of the people on this forum understand some of the basics of Continuously Variable Transmissions and how they operate, but I couldn't resist pointing out this reviewer's lack of knowledge on the subject.

WSJ: Accord V6 Touring
As I count them, the new Accord had three priorities, all achieved: to regain competitiveness in fuel economy and powertrain sophistication; to re-establish the brand’s advantage in refinement and noise abatement; and to correct—even overcorrect, if possible—the impression left by recent Hondas that management cheaped out on materials.

This is a resoundingly more solid and satisfying car than before, an impression of substance that extends from the door handles to the seat frames. Wind noise at 70 mph is just about nil, for instance. The cabin materials of our full-dresser V6—with fine-grain leather seats, door gussets and steering wheel, as well as lovely gloss-black resins and alloy trim—step way up from last year’s car.

Look, people who shop for family sedans are Vulcans, driven by logic, denying the temptations of emotion. They constitute a self-selected audience of the deeply reasonable and intensely practical. The new Accord will resonate with them. I predict it will live long and prosper.

Car & Driver: Sedan V6
Honda’s six-speed automatic transmission finally migrates from the Odyssey and various Acuras to V-6 Accords for 2013, replacing the old five-speed, and now includes a Sport mode that holds gears longer and delivers responsive downshifts. (The V-6/six-speed-manual combo remains exclusive to the coupe.) With less weight to haul around—3552 pounds versus 3607 for the last V-6 sedan we tested—our Touring example sprinted to 60 mph in 5.6 seconds and tripped the quarter-mile lights in 14.1 at 101 mph. Those figures put it solidly ahead of all of its competitors and into sports-sedan territory; the Accord ties our long-term, six-speed-manual BMW 328i to 60 and trumps that car in the quarter by 0.2 second and 1 mph.

C&D: 2.4L Manual
Power in the Accord Sport comes from a 189-hp version of Honda’s new, direct-injected 2.4-liter 4-cylinder. (The LX, EX, and EX-L have just 185 horses; to get six cylinders, step up to the EX-L V-6 or Touring, please.) All 181 lb-ft of torque—20 more than the previous-gen EX’s four-cylinder engine—appear by 3900 rpm, which makes it possible to inject some thrills into the daily commute without winding each gear to the 6800-rpm redline. Of course if you wish to play, the powertrain is ready and willing, as evidenced by our notes from the test track: “Plenty of low-end torque, so you’ll want to launch around 2500 rpm and spin the tires to redline. Very easy to approach the rev limiter and then shift at just the right time.” The 6.6-second scoot to 60 is mighty impressive—it’s 1.3 seconds quicker than the last-gen four-cylinder/manual model—and the car covered the quarter in 15.3. Those in the mood to save fuel rather than time can select Eco Assist mode via an Econ button to the left of the steering wheel; it alters the operating characteristics of the climate control and remaps throttle response in the name of efficiency.

New Honda Accord Outperforms Higher-Priced Luxury Vehicles Like BMW, Mercedes & Lexus
While the all-new Accord has a lot more horsepower, the cabin was extremely quiet during the road test. “Normal conversation volume measures in at 65 decibels,” says Kelly. “The new Accord measures in at an exceptional 56 decibels. It was amazing to see the amount of soundproofing that Honda put into the vehicle.” Under the hood of the 2013 Accord, you’ll find a thick soundproofing mat, which helps keeps most engine noise away from the cabin. However, Kelly says that the Accord also features additional rubber gaskets around the edges, which provides even more soundproofing.

http://www.newswire.ca/en/story/1059731/honda-accord-sedan-named-best-new-family-car-under-30-000

MARKHAM, ON, Oct. 26, 2012 /CNW/ - The 2013 Honda Accord Sedan was voted the best vehicle in its class yesterday, when the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC) recognized its fuel efficiency, safety, fun-to-drive performance and overall value.

"We thank AJAC for hosting this year's TestFest and we're extremely proud to see the Accord recognized by so many of Canada's top journalists," said Dave Jamieson, assistant vice president, Honda Canada. "The Accord is one of our most important and best-selling vehicles, so we're thrilled to receive the great feedback that we're continuing to raise the bar in the family car category."

The 2013 AJAC Canadian Car of the Year (COTY) competition was conducted from October 21-26 in Niagara-On-The-Lake, Ontario with more than 80 journalist members of AJAC conducting back-to-back test evaluations of more than 60 vehicles in 11 separate categories. According to AJAC officials, the event is designed to provide Canadian consumers with sound, comparative information on vehicles that are new to the market.

Hmpphh... well I road tested the 4 cyl accord against the Altima and Sonata yesterday. A Camry was there too but I didnt get a turn in it. On the same piece of highway at the same 110kph, 65 mph, all measured in the 70-71db range. In all models it was predominantly road noise. Subjectively the Sonata was worst, having more road noise especially in the back. The Accord seemed to have the quietest engine. There was some wind noise in the Accord which the others did not have. I'd tie the Altima and Accord in seat comfort - ways ahead of the Sonata, which also suffers from the cruddiest leather I have ever seen. More like a vinyl/rubber compound complete with fake perforations. All lack headroom in the back compared to the 8 gen Accord (or the Fit!), but the Altima has less rear leg room subjectively. Accord has by far the best ride, and its steering is a little less vague. Altima had the best stereo and the nicest primary dash/instruments.

Though I never got to drive or ride in the camry it was universally disliked by other sales people - not even quiet and comfy - and with some cheap elements interior wise. Annoying I couldnt try it myself.

By the way the Sonata's heated rear seats are hot or off - the Accords you can put on low which remain comfortable.

If I were a customer I'd only want to choose between between the Accord and Altima. Both of which feel near luxury class. I think the accord looks way nicer, i am sure the V6 would walk all over any Altima offering, as would the 6 speed manual 4. I still find the CVT in the Accord CVTish at times but it is more than tolerable and better than any other CVT.

I commented earlier that the Accord has lost its window lowering from the key facility - seems in the leather versions it hasnt, just in the lower versions, Sport anyway, this doesnt work.
