Nice and clean. I love anything "hatched."
My wife loves the A3 so I'm sure she'd like this, too.

I like it. Also like the fact, weight on the next GTI will be down 220 lbs or so and power with be up 30-40 hp.

VW is headed in the right direction and I might go back (but only with an extended warranty).

I like it too and also dont forget that the new Golf is suppose to have available its new VAQ front differential. VW has said that using this new diff in the same car compared to the old diff's in the Golf thay have been able to shave off 8.5 seconds on the same track......sounds pretty interesting.

"The claimed kerb weight of the most basic new model is just 1050kg." (according to autocar amongst other places). That's impressive (admittedly the higher spec models would weigh more, wonder what the GTi would come in at), mid size hatchbacks have been ~1200kg.

The current gen euro Civic (what is the codename for the post-FN2 model ?), kerb weights are as follows according to the Honda UK website : 1.4i manual is 1272kg, 1.8i manual is 1292kg, 2.2i diesel manual is 1487kg. There's some serious weight to be lost for the next generation.

Well those Civic weights are in keeping with the ugly, fat and bloated look of the rear of the Euro Civic :)

Let me see how VW shed sth like up to 100 kg, but won't tout about:

- like, the come back of torsion beam rear suspension;

- dropping the over-complexed twin charged 1.4 engine;

- just count the savings, but never mention any weight gained due to higher tech content.

Welcome to the age of spinning.

In the UK, the current lightest Golf is 1.2 S TSI 85hp @ 1,229 kg;
1.2 S TSI 105 hp @1,233 kg;
1.4 Match TSI 122 hp @1,290 kg. (I think the Civic 1.8 has 140 hp)

In Germany, the lightest Golf I can find is 2 dr 1.2 TSI 85 hp @ 1,205 kg.

This wasn't a comment on the Civic's weight in particular, all the mid-size hatches are like this. Ford Focus kerb weights from the Ford website include 1276kg (1.0, 5-door), 1270kg (1.6 manual), ~1340kg (1.6 diesel manual). The 2.0 diesel auto is 1461kg.

By the way, I love the styling of the FN2 :-)

Each to his own I say! :)

It looks OK from the front, just can't like that rear, but then I'm the same with my women :) :)

VW are doing some impressive things these days, Lightweight Volkswagen Golf 'Carbon GTI' planned
The Mk7 Volkswagen Golf will be joined by a limited run, lightweight performance version of the GTi ... Its front bulkhead, windscreen surround and floor panels will be fashioned from lightweight aluminium and the roof and bonnet from hi-tech carbonfibre. These advanced materials could shave up to 200kg off the Carbon GTi’s kerb weight, compared with today’s GTi, pushing it towards a highly competitive 1125kg.
To be fair, if that was a Honda (Carbon Civic Type-R, anyone ?) we'd be raving about it.

I'm impressed with the new MQB Golf. But I am not impressed by a "carbon" GTI. The use of CF is, in my opinion, a bandaid or at the very least, tinsel to impress the easily amused. The aluminum construction was also used in the front half of the BMW 5-series so it's nothing new.

Remember VW is striving to be worlds largest auto manufacturer and owns like 12 brands. They got all the access to technology from Lamborghini, Porsche, Bentley, Bugatti, Audi etc.

Don't discount Honda, they where the first full aluminum car maker and have been working on other composite materials too, ( in race development and their work on the Honda Jet. Honda is at work with new lightweight fun to drive vehicles. Will the new CR-Z or Type R Civic be the first lightweight Honda? Or will it be the new "NSX mini" or the real NSX itself? We will soon see. Honda is at work.

According to the first link you provided:
The new Golf 7 has lost weight – as much as 220 lbs. depending on the trim level.

So, what's in the web site you linked are facts, but what I said was spinning? LOL.

My speculation about the rear suspension came from here:
Few details about the Golf’s chassis have been revealed but Drive understands it will be sold with two different suspension systems depending on the engine it runs. In a move mirroring that of the latest Beetle, lower-end models will receive MacPherson struts (front) and a torsion beam (rear) – an arrangement that harks back to the fourth-generation Golf.

According to brochure from http://www.volkswagen.de/de/models/golf_7.html

- lightest one I can find - 1.2 TSI 85 PS 3dr curb weight [which, in accordance w/ EU include driver and gas(?) of ~75kg]: 1,205 kg [seems no change from prev. model]
- 1.4 TSI 140 PS: 1,270 kg (0-100 kmh: 8.4 sec mfr claim)

Honda Germany Civic curb weight [also includes additional 75 kg]
- 1.8L 142 PS 5 dr: 1,322 kg (0-100 kmh: 8.7 sec mfr claim)

Conclusion:
1) The lightest Golf available in Germany is far heavier than the 1,050 kg claimed;
2) The difference btn Golf VII 1.4 TSI and Civic 1.8 (closest in performance) is ~ 50kg, not 240 kg as suggested. [In reality it should be much less than 50 kg, as the Golf is 3 dr not 5 dr]

bigblue wrote:
