Honda Uneven Tire Wear    (Score: 1, Normal) 08-24-2012 08:18

I've owned 6 Honda cars since 2002 including Accords, Civic SI, Pilot, Odysseys, & CRV. Despite routine tire rotations and alignments all of the vehicles had a pronounced tire wobble or hop after couple thousand miles of wear.

My wife's brand new 2011 CRV developed the tire wobble after the first oil change & rotation around 7k miles. She is pissed that her new car "rides like crap now".

I've asked other Honda owners and they also have the same issue. The only clue I could find is TSB 08-001 for '06-'09 Civics "Rear-Upper Control Arms that are causing their tires to wear rapidly and unevenly" (SI excluded).

Can anyone shed light on what causes the tire wobble on Honda cars. Is it due to uneven tire wear with the aggressive rear wheel camber? I notice that Honda's have a noticeable camber compared to other vehicles (don't see any camber on Toyota Camry for example).

I've never had any serious problems. In fact I've never owned any Honda or Acura which showed tire wear from alignment issues. I will say that proper tire balance seems to have become more of a challenge as tire/wheel diameters increased over the years. So much so that I now have tires balanced only at my Honda dealer's shop which uses current machines.

- Do the tire rotations include balancing? Have you always taken your cars to the same shop? It might be worth a try elsewhere.
- Do the tires show uneven wear such as out of roundness (flat areas) on the edges of the treads? A little feathering of the tread blocks is okay but shows the tires should be rotated more often.
- Anything interesting about the roads you and your wife drive on such as rough overlay pavement?
- Is the tire wobble related to your driving speed or is the ride rough at all speeds?
- Aftermarket wheels which may not have correct hub diameters or inserts?

One comment about the CRV I owned is I had to be careful about choosing a correct tire for it. A set of Yokohama AVID tires did get a little rough at times on certain types of pavement.

Answers to your questions:

We service our Hondas only at the dealer's shop.

Tire wear is not visible on any of our cars.

Tire wobble is apparent at all speeds.

No aftermarket wheels only OEM alloys.

CRV has stock factory tires only 7,000 miles.

I have not noticed this with the 4 Honda cars we have owned.
The standard issue tires are sometimes not the best, however.

Tire Wobble....lol.

This is the same issue Ford had with Explorers from the 90's which also had the rollover issues.

Ford engineers couldn't solve the wobble issue, so they figured out lowering the tire pressure simply made it dissappear and hence Explorers from that era only had a 28psi recommended tire pressure.

My point is, you might try adjusting tire pressue up and down (all four tires) and see if you get get it to vanish or diminish significantly.

LouM, that's interesting. Your description still points to tire balance in my opinion. There must be some reasonable explanation - you're talking about a variety of cars running a variety of tires. You might want to try a different dealer service department or a tire shop.
