Something must have gone really wrong. If that is the same track Top Gear use, it is quite seems like there is a lot of space to run off.

One has to ALWAYS be aware that driving motor cars, at speed, even on a race track is inherently dangerous!

Just last month, a fellow interstate competitor whom I had met last year and gotten to know very well [he raced an EG Civic much like my own] was killed in a racing accident at the Mallala race track.

And then there is the unfortunate accident a couple days ago of Maria de Villota who had an accident in straight line testing of an F1 car. She has lost an eye, and remains in a critical condition. Sad times.

How common is it to squeeze five into a test car during 'high speed' [I assume] / dangerous testing/maneuver?

Perhaps that was the very point of the test?? To observe stupidly loaded car's handling at stupid speeds?? Who knows.

To prove torsion beams are unpredictable under such conditions? Who can tell? It doesn't really matter what they were doing it for (even for fun) and it's just rather sad and unfortunate that something went tragically wrong.
