Here's a quote from the ZDX's designer (from the Torrance studio) rhapsodizing about how wonderful that vehicle is:

“Suspenseful emotion. The idea is that this car creates a lot of energy, motion, and dynamic every time you see it. Exterior-wise, it’s motion surfacing, or pulled, directional, and tensioned. By pulled we mean a slingshot image being held back just before release. For directional, we used architecture (for inspiration), specifically a building in Harajuku, Japan, that even though it’s a gigantic, solid structure, it appears to be moving. It doesn’t look stationary when stationary. Lastly, tension, an image of a bullet being shot through a medium like water—that ripple effect.”

Isn't suspenseful emotion when you have diarrhea and you are not sure if you will make it to the toilet? I see similarities to the ZDX and the marketing babble about it.

I could have done a much better job...

Here it is.. four wheels, five doors, room for five. Right here, it's got some headlights, over there, some red taillights. Big brakes all over. Mucho power and great efficiency....

If you want, the AC will freeze you, the heater will bake you and the stereo is the best.

There you go... no mumbo jumbo, just some nice front fenders that wrap around the front wheels. Small front overhang, two box design with a nice slope to the back window and a vestigial upper wing to extend the roof for aerodynamics.

Hmm.. I guess I forgot to talk about buildings or shoes or tension...

Acura design is now run by a guy who psycho-babbles, and a chick with a shoe fetish. The product is tested by underage metrosexuals who carry murses.

Sounds like the perfect people to peddle the Chevy Volt.

Too bad Honda doesn't have a guy like Bob Lutz. Or if they do he can't see the light of day.

Honda's problems can best be demonstrated by the fact they say that it took six months to decide on the exhaust outlets on a car.

Honda needs a Bob Lutz or Herb Kelleher.

Or Allan Mulally.... (Key trolls in 3,2,1...../)

Why the mud slinging? She penned a design and I don't think from the initial draft to the end model it's made without interference from the higher ups. The ZDX was rough indeed, but was she forced from the technical point of view (engine placement/wheelbase/crash structure) to make the ZDX that way? Or was the management forced the power plenum design to her existing ZDX draft? To me she's a name and a face that is convenient to be mud flinged at.

The proof is that she was accepted back to Honda. Rehiring somebody is proof they did good work before and the parting was in good term.

The ZDX only needs taller rear (faux wagon look) to have more interior room at back, and shorter front overhang (but same length). I think the ZDX is quite okay, the sharp lines are cohesive enough, I can also forego the front overhang, just make the rear taller and it should be done.

Personally, I think the main problem with cars like the ZDX and the Crosstour is simply that Honda/Acura are slapping themselves in the face. They have already openly admit to being concerned about the bottom line - sales, numbers, etc, to the extent that they have been openly abandoning their long time supporters. So then, why do these two models exist ? They are totally opposite to what Honda/Acura says they want to focus on. From what I see, this has been the main source of animosity for these models.

Just a correction - rehiring someone means that the hiring manager _feels_ they did good work. Given the general condition of the Acura brand and its product line, I wouldn't feel so confident about the feelings and opinions of the hiring management at this point.

The more I read Schell's piece the more I think it belongs in Pseuds Corner in UK's Private Eye magazine. I read they even have a section for pretentious, waffling meaningless corporate press releases and statements (Pseuds Corporate) - for which this qualifies perfectly.

And as for that "If it’s all love, it’s not good; if it’s all hate, it’s not good" comment - what bollocks - didn't we all agree how nice the old TL was. Anyone find an S2000 hateful? What about a Jaguar XJ or E type. Or an NSU RO80, Citroen DS, C1 and C2 Corvettes. Most Astons. An Alfa 159 or Brera. Or even, if the concept pans out, the Mazda Takeri. Sure you have to push boundaries sometimes. The shock of the new. And sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. The ZDX doesn't, no matter how you word it.

Go on... I challenge anyone to hate this practical four door sedan....

Aaah... you chose an Alfa Romeo to hate and love.

Of all cars, of all brands, it had to be Alfa Romeo....

Ratz!

As a reformed Alfisti, I must note that I both loved and hated my old Alfa. It was truly a beautiful design, inside, outside, undercarriage, you name it. I got to know its undercarriage very well you see... beautiful castings on the suspension, transaxle, brakes, etc...

So, yes.... I hate that Alfa.. and "PRACTICAL"??? ROTFLOL... I don't think anyone ever considers an Alfa Romeo practical. It's the perfect second car for weekends, when it run, but "practical"? Only for your mechanic's wallet.

Now, on a more practical note... I don't buy into the love/hate/emotion crap for a car, that's marketing/design speak. You may "like" a car because it runs well and is comfortable and fun... and you may truly "detest" a car that spends all its time in the shop and is a money pit. But love/hate based on some design line... hell, we don't even "hate" the power plenum, we just don't like it.
