Not sure how many TOV'ers are watching the Indy 500 right and I hope I'm not going to jinx them, but the updated engines seem to be running strong for Honda.

I really wanted Taku to win! In the lead for over 30 laps, in the hunt more many more.. sweet pass on Dixon on the next to last lap.. if he'd juuuust waited for the backstraight on the final lap... aw man! Imagine, Takuma Sato, Indy 500 winner. Bummed..

Congrats to Dario and TCG, though. Good race, too nervous in the pits per usual for IndyCar, though.

I will say this, Taku showed no hesitation at all when an interviewer just asked him if he should've waited to make that pass on turn one of the final lap. "No, because it was the last lap, and I was in. It wasn't like (paraphrasing) late braking into a corner, I was not on the brakes, I was in. Unfortunately I feel Dario did not give me enough room, I was on the white line and he continued to push. I had nowhere to go".

For me at least he has the determination and goes for it. I've shaken my head (and facepalmed) over the years, but he's a racer and very entertaining. Glad he's ok after that crash.

Damn right! (Coming from an Indy-only, Masters/US Open/PGA Championship-type sports fan. Yeah, only the big stuff.)

One helluva race! Nice fitting tributes to Dan Wheldon.

Awesome ending, tough go for sato considering his aversion to the white line the entire race but he had committed to pass before the lap even began. He was so patient the entire race, so it was a shame it had to end in typical kamikaze fashion for him.

great day for honda too, single turbo ftw.

I watched the race and it was just a great race. I loved how Franchitti kept his car from spinning, and couldn't believe he got that other guy off his tail when he was about to be taken. I wish I knew there was a live thread going on at the TOV.

I couldn't help but to remember Wheldon and Zanardi.

It was/is live on Speedvision [Foxtel]. Looking forward to watching my recording when I get home after work. They show a highlights package [2 hours worth] on Monday evenings.

It might be on One HD, not sure.

Bob Kravitz, reporting for the Indianapolis Star, described Takuma Sato's last lap attempt to pass Franchitti on the inside of turn 3 as "brave or stupid," "courageous or foolhardy." Yep, it was that alright. Had he pulled it off, however -- and as I sure as hell was hoping he could -- it would have been the stuff of Indy legend for years. Instead, Franchitti knew enough to force Sato down onto the white line, and at that point the spin was inevitable. Now, like Al Unser in '89 (and many others before him), Sato is destined to re-live that moment in sound bites and video clips for years to come.

Damn!

Turn 1 (of course), not 3.

Addendum: “He was so close to pulling that off,” Dixon said afterward. . . If he maybe moved up on Dario a little bit more, it could have worked . . . ."

I suspect that even if he had made it, Dario would have been able to slingshot around for the win anyway. Those cars were getting a helluva run coming out of the draft.

Kudos to Franchitti and Target...

Someday poor old Sato is going to win it....

Now... all we need is that K22Z in the ILX-S and Civic Si and we'll be set for a while.... Maybe Shawn might even buy a Honda again. ;-D

The replays I've seen of Sato's attempted pass haven't been very clear but it looked like Franchitti gave him a little room. I think Sato just made an aggressive mistake. Has anyone seen anything pointing to Franchitti?

I think the Indy cars are now ugly but Sato did walk away from his crash okay so that's good news.

The way I saw it, Sato was just being Sato :) He went in a little bit tight and lost the rear. Franchitti gave him just enough room, no more, as you would expect. Sato is saying Franchitti didn't give him enough room, but then he would.

Racing incident, end of story IMHO.

Yeah, I think it was just a racing incident and Sato being Sato - aggressive, impatient - my point earlier in the thread was that Sato knows that's what he's doing and doesn't seem like he's about to change. That's why I pointed out how he responded without any hesitation to the interviewer's question. He's aggressive and goes for the opening, and he's entertaining - and frustrating. Man, I wanted him to make it work, but that duck under Dario on the inside of Turn 1 seemed to play out in slow motion and I was on pins & needles.

This was actually the second time Sato had led a race at Indy. He also led a lap or two at the 2004 USGP.

I think that Dario is on the ragged edge of being a 'dirty driver.' He certainly moved on the front straight to make Sato lose his momentum. Had he not made that move, Sato might have been a wheel ahead going into turn 1, forcing Dario to back out.

Now, having said that, it's the last lap of the Indy 500 and I'm not sure that anyone wouldn't have made the same move (if Marco had done it, he'd have been a 1st time winner). I believe that Sato made the right move, cause Dario would have been expecting something into Turn 3 and blocked even more. IMO, if you're going to pass someone that you KNOW will defend, you have to catch him off guard. Sato also said later that there was a headwind on the back straight and he would have had a harder time there.

I probably would have too. Do you think that if Sato had done it to Dario there would have been a blocking penalty?
