And more expensive, the 2013 Sonata has an $1100 base price increase.

I'm not a huge fan of the attitude. They seem to think that Ford and Nissan wouldn't have increased the fuel economy of the Altima and Fusion if not for the Sonata. As for the design - I've never thought the Sonata looked all that good and was just different for the sake of being different. Not to mention the fact that Hyundai, for years, tried to copy other automakers designs to try and be successful. In any case, it will be interesting to see what consumers choose to purchase.

Nissan did just say the Sonata caused them to give more thought to the 2013 Altima
http://www.autoblog.com/2012/04/27/hyundai-sonata-caused-nissan-to-reassess-2013-altima-development

$1100 prince increase sounds pretty crazy though, what did they add? I wonder if it's a marketing ploy so that early/mid 13 when they come out with the 14 Sonata they can cut the price back from this $1100 and say 'and we lowered the price by $600'?

Since when is improving the performance or efficiency of your product taking a page from someones book. This attitude is very strange, I can't recall ever seeing similar behavior from any of the well established brands. "Bring it," judging from the upcoming models might turn out to be the famous last words of overconfidence.

On another note, they just dropped the manual equipped Sonata. I'm glad to see that the new Accord will still be offering it and in multiple trims.

In terms of the new Altima I haven't seen any mention of the future of the coupe, which is the only manual Altima offered. Is it being dropped from the lineup, or is it continuing on unchanged? If it's the latter, the changes to the new Accord coupe will look revolutionary in comparison.

Calling out other competitors for [insert subject] isn't anything new in the marketing world for automakers. Look at Ford, Chevy and Dodge with their pickup trucks. They've been calling each other out for years and their commercials are pretty entertaining too. Even Toyota has jumped into the fray. This isn't that different, just another company making another claim on another product.

I thought the price increase was crazy as well. The only thing I can think of is that since they dropped the manual tranny (which can be nearly a grand cheaper depending on the car) it just looks like the price took a huge leap on paper. Take the Accord for example. Had Honda dropped the manual tranny on the '12 model, it would look (on paper) as if the price increased from $21,480 to $22,280. I could be wrong though, I don't usually keep track of pricing on Hyundais.

Church123? ;-)

Anyhow.. the dollar is hitting Hyundai finally?

And the cars _are_ beginning to look dated.

What I find interesting is that Hyundai is ignoring the Camry and the Accord. Picking only on the Fusion and the Altima.

Everything else.. their attitude... is just acting to get attention. Keeping the brand in customers mind as the value slips, the design grows stale and the competition is getting updates.

Not surprised. Hyundai also raised price of Elantra by more than 1,000.

Hilarious. Especially in context of them dropping out of the sales race lead quite significantly. Not to mention that Hyundai got to where it was through a mix of marketing and following Toyota's playbook.

The Sonata is merely average at this point, I'm not sure what compelled their team to put out smack talk.

Nissan must be really worried, because I just saw an ad on a web site that says, "Looking for a Hyundai? How about a Nissan? Click here". (It's a local ad in one of theose google ads.)

I'm NOT kidding.

I think they really need to be because if Hyundai got everything right among the first victims is Nissan.

The problem with Hyundai's strategy was that when Toyota started executing their own playbook again (after the well publicized quality snafus), there was no way Hyundai was going to out Toyota Toyota.

This is a big part of the reason Honda needs to focus on being Honda. Kia isn't going to out Honda the Honda Motor Company as long as Honda stops worrying about Kia taking over and builds the product they should build. Fundamentally, people under-estimate the value of a lot of ownership history (with something like 70% of Honda owners sticking around for the last...oh...30 years or so, I don't think Honda would have to try very hard to keep them around. But they have to be Honda to do it.

I thought it was funny that one of the comments on IL was talking about how awesome Hyundai was because they were #3 a couple of years ago, and had slightly increased sales since then. What they didn't mention was that Sonata was back at like #5 for the year, which means everyone else increased them more...

Maybe they were losing money because, at least around me in NJ, all of the Hyundai dealers offer these insane discounts in loud booming radio ads and commercials to get people in the door. Maybe people are now conditioned to expect those things from Hyundai and they need to compensate?

When Hyundai put their buy-back guarantee and lengthy warranty in place they set a price floor for themselves. Take either of those away or start raising prices and customers will naturally ask why not shop Honda, Toyota, Ford, Chevy. Classic marketing case of why price alone will destroy a business. Which means Honda also needs to be careful with the incentives they have going at the moment.

I'd like to say the Sonata styling has grown on me but it simply hasn't. The crunched hood and slanted taillamps just don't hold up even with the loaded version with the huge alloy wheels. While old Hondas can look pretty stale it's much better than cliche. I wonder what the used market for the Sonata will be in another four years. Also, Hyundai must have by now burned through the government backing funds they've been using for this current onslaught.

Don't fool yourselves, Honda is looking at Hyundai too and taking notes. Nissan just voiced what the other makers are thinking. And that is how many of Hyundai sales numbers should have been theirs.

Read somewhere that Hyundai may be moving to 4 year cycles,if so Hyundai will keep the pressure on the other makes.

Longhorn, every company is looking at every company. It's the nature of competition, especially in the automotive industry. On any given day, you look at any automaker's private fleet, and they have a whole range of competitor vehicles.

I find it a shame personally that the Hyundai Sonata is doing so well, particularly since I thought the Kia Optima is MUCH, MUCH better looking. That car will age very gracefully, unlike the Sonata.

By the way, the Toyota Camry truly was a masterful strike back against Hyundai, really put them in their place; it gets even better with all of the improvements that Toyota is making to each new car. You're right Owe, as soon as Toyota went back to their playbook, there was no way in hell Hyundai was going to out-Toyota Toyota. We can only hope that Honda is in the middle of a transitional period but will also go back to being Honda.
