Clearly the marketers are responsible for this quote.

Offered with three distinct powertrains, the ILX is the first ever Acura model to offer more than two choices of motivation.

They forgot to mention it was the first time two were lifted straight from the Honda parts bin from the sister model, unchanged. (2.4L 6MT and hybrid).

Nobody's doing cart wheels and jumping jacks over either of these in the Civic and now they're carry-over into the new premium model. That's a new precedent for Acura, I hope it doesn't continue.

Yep- I'd say its Accavitti's charm and high powered intellect at work there. Acura has had 3 engine choices in one model... they just chose to forget them. I guess because the displacement was nearly the same, they don't count it as "distinct", though you sure couldn't convince the buyers of that.... and they sold like crazy!

lol, Honda will tell you that the ILX hybrid has exactly 1 hp more than the Civic. Honda will also tell you the ILX 2.4 doesn't have LSD, unlike the Civic...so technically..they are right, 3 distinct powertrains (powertrains include LSD afterall).

Jokes aside, we know that these powertrains are only here temporarily and will be replaced as soon as the new ED powertrains are released.

I don't think we'll see a drivetrain change in the ILX until it gets redesigned in 2017'ish (?), with the possible exception of a MMC deletion...Yes, I said DELETION... of the 2.4L .

Why is that my guess? The entrance of these 3 ILX's pushes up their CAFE avg significantly. Further efforts toward 2016 compliance will ALL focus on the larger vehicles - so we wont see ED's come to the ILX until all other models (Acura and Honda) are revised - Civic and ILX will be last on that list.

I could envision Acura keeping the TSX, eliminating its V6 option and adding the new Accord's ED's 2.4+CVT in 2014, to further dilute the larger Acura models MPGs across two more 4cyl TSX models.... and a last ditch attempt to meet the 35.5 corporate average by 2016. I believe thats the primary reason for retaining the TSX, even more than uncertainty about the ILX's success (Mendel and Conrad, being naught more than political chimps, don't think that deeply and therefore wont even fathom their concept wont be successful. Hence the visible acting out when checked by the press.). Who knows, but my bet is 'NO' ED's, until the 2017 redesign.

Hmm..I understand where you are coming from, but Jeff went to a media event and talked with the people from Honda. Here's the article for that event:
http://www.vtec.net/news/news-item?news_item_id=1048046

And here is the note that talks about the ED powertrains:

"Earth Dreams powerplants will be introduced to the line about as soon as they're available. Not necessarily waiting for a hard date for an MMC event. "

With 7 displacements for ED's, new trannys, and a huge load of new cars to update, its certainly an interesting discussion: at what point will TSX be updated/killed, when will ILX get EDs?... Theres a huge amount on their plate before the 2016 CAFEs when it shifts to segment-by-segment. So I find the strategy and risk management (contingency) discussions exciting.

I would LOVE to see an updated Model Release Matrix if its even possible to get those any longer.

Here's what I think will happen: the TSX will finish out its product cycle in Model Year 2013 (Fall 2012-Summer 2013), after which, it is toast... sort of.

The TSX and TL will be merged into the TLX, based on the 9G USDM Accord platform. Both the TSX and TL fall into the mid-size category, so it makes sense to merge them. While the 1G TSX was sporty and nimble, the larger 2G TSX is more a touring car than a sports sedan, and the same largely applies to the TL. There is no reason for Acura to keep building 2 mid-size touring sedans. To keep a Japan-built TSX in the lineup for North America also poses problems with exchange rates so unfavorable.

As far as the ILX:

They need Earth Dreams yesterday, and I think Acura knows this. Acura already confirmed to Jeff that the engines would not wait for a MMC, so I think Model Year 2014 is a reasonable guess (basically Fall 2013).

I also think that the ILX will eventually have more reach beyond Acura and beyond North America. I actually think that it makes sense to use the ILX platform in Europe as the next EU Accord.

Currently:

Global Small Car Platform (Fit) is used for the EU Civic
Step up one size to USDM/JDM Civic Platform, and you can build a car that is bigger than EU Civic. Hence, EU Accord.

For the EU market, a Tourer (5-door hatch) is a must.

I can see an ILX Tourer in the future for the EU market, and to replace the USDM TSX SportWagon. An ILX Coupe would round out the line nicely.

I'm still not sure if TSX is going away or not. I heard that TSX will not be redesigned earlier. But Mendel later said it will stay.

IMO, the ILX is not good enough to challenge 3 series, A4, C class etc. I see it in the class of 1 series, A3, etc. On the other hand, isn't the new RLX competing with 7 series, A8, S class, etc? If so, I'd imagine the TSX will take on the 3 series segment, while the TLX will take on the 5 series segment.

If Acura is merging TSX and TL into the TLX, then will it compete with 3 series or 5 series? Or will it just compete with the 3 series, while the RLX will compete with 5 series (meaning no 7 series competitor)?
