Interesting article.
Does it make "perceived quality" more important?

Interesting indeed.
Especially since Japanese reliability (over here) seems to be slipping.
Long-term durability is harder to assess; by the time people relise it, it's ceased to be important.
But yes, you are right; the only real advantage the Teir 2s have is PQ and if THAT starts filtering down, they are in trouble like the Teir 3s!

I dont think Japanese quality is slipping, It just that others are catching up, except, of course europeans, which in general still have worse reliability than anyone else.

Why "of course europeans"? I feel Audis and BMWs are equally good the first 3-4years, I have never had a car older than 5 so cannot really say what happens after that.
Sounds like hearsay and rumors, the same way most of my colleagues hate japanese cars because they think they drive like sh*t... but so wrong they are.
Please don't generalize, it kills this interesting forum.

Of the european brands, VW and audi have mediocre to poor reliabilty, MB is trash and BMW's only reliable vehicle is the 3 series, and that one is midpack ampong other brands. Range Rover and Jaguar are pure unadulterated crap, must I continue? In general, european brands are as reliable as detroit was in the bad old days.

JD Powers has improved a little over the years, it used to be purely promotional (till a few years ago). I still trust CR's long term database by long shot.
