Conclusion

To the Eye
Styling is one of those things that's almost entirely subjective, and of all the subjective categories for judging a vehicle, styling might be subject to the greatest variance in taste. With that said, my opinion of the 2009 TSX's styling is rather neutral. One thing I really liked about the original TSX was that it had a clean, lithe, and fresh look to it. The 2009 bears a strong resemblance to the original TSX, but it looks like it's been padded with a few inches of foam insulation. This detracts from the slight edginess of the '04-'08 TSX's design, and certain elements of the '09 TSX make it look a lot like a Lexus ES350 and a bit generic. While the original TSX was sometimes criticized for lacking character, the '09 seems to be trying too hard to impress, particularly with respect to the oversized bulges in the fenders and the power plenum grille (though I will admit it looks approximately 1000% better than the 2009 RL's grille). On the positive side, the 2009 TSX's additional width really give it a much more substantial, muscular look on the road, particularly when viewed from behind. This was one of the weakest angles of the original TSX - many criticized it for appearing too tall and narrow. I would have been more happy if the 2009 TSX stayed closer to the original TSX's design theme, and stayed away from some of the styling gadgets that were employed.

First Conclusions
Overall, as you can tell, I have mixed feelings about the 2009 TSX. As a big fan of the original TSX (and past owner of a 2004 model), I had very high hopes for the 2009 TSX. Unfortunately, the 2009 TSX has taken a slight kink off of its original course. In most measurable categories it is a better car than the outgoing model, it's just not quite what I was hoping for. If you've had your eye on a TL, but would feel better about driving a more efficient and more affordable 4-cylinder, this could be your car. The overriding emotion that I felt from nearly the moment I stepped into the car was that I was driving the new 2.4 TL. We're holding out hope that there's going to be a 3.0 or 3.2 TSX announced sometime in the next year or so. Acura hasn't released final pricing for the TSX, but a range of $29000-35000 was given. The 2009 TSX should appear in your local Acura showroom on or about April 24, 2008.

2009 Acura TSX

Onsale DateApril 24, 2008
MSRP$28,960 (base), $32060 (Tech). Destination charge is $715.

Pros
  • Robust, refined, and efficient 2.4-liter 4-cylinder
  • Excellent FF handling, refinement, and comfort
  • Well appointed interiors
  • Tech package offers superb ELS stereo and feature-packed navigation system, including real-time weather, real-time traffic, and XM Note
  • Cons
  • The 2008 TSX was already a bit too heavy. The 2009 packs on nearly 150 more lbs. To add insult to injury, it now makes less power.
  • Styling remains unoffensive, but is less distinctive than 2008 TSX
  • Added width and electric power steering may be to blame for reduced fun factor
  • The Verdict
The TSX remains a great package, offering new levels of luxury and technology, but enthusiasts will probably prefer the feel of the old TSX.
