First published dyno test of the first V6-powered Hybrid!

Again we would like to extend a special thanks to Arthur at Dynolab of Marietta, GA for providing us with the facilities to perform the first dyno test of the new Accord Hybrid.

As you can see in the Accord Hybrid's dyno curve below, the Hybrid Accord puts down nearly as much power as a 2004 TL, which is rated at 270 flywheel hp. The claimed gains of the IMA system (15hp, 20lb-ft) appear to be accurate.

Windows Media V9 - 420x240 - 0:22 - 1.34MB

From looking at the curve, and also from the driver's seat, you can see that the IMA system shuts down its assist at 6400 rpm. Another thing I noticed is that (much like the '05 Odyssey) VCM is disabled at speeds above around 82mph. While on the rollers, we explored the Accord Hybrid's top speed potential, and found that the electronic speed limiter cuts in at an indicated 132mph.

Now on its own, the above plot is impressive enough. But check out this comparison with the 2003 Accord EX V6 we tested on the same dyno:

Now you can actually see that the IMA system delivers quite a bit of additional punch across nearly the entire rev range.

As discussed early, the charge/assist and VCM modes of operation are largely transparent while on the road. On the chassis dyno, however, it was much easier to discern when either system was operating - apparently road noise and rumble are plenty to mask (to the point of virtual transparency) whatever sounds and vibrations that these systems generate. People don't drive to work on chassis dynos, however, so it's pretty much a moot point - we only mention it because it's what we observed.

2005 Honda Accord Hybrid Dyno Test
Test Date:December 21, 2004
